Current Volunteer Needs at the PCC
Here is where we REALLY NEED your help!

  • Saturday Assistants: Staff a shift ( 8:30 – noon or noon-4:30 ) at the Front Range Building (we have projects for you if visitation is slow)
  • Curatorial work/Data entry: Create specimen lists, inventory artifacts and biofacts; enter volunteer information, specimen data, and more. Will train and provide the computer for you to use while you’re here!
  • Heirloom or habitat garden assistants: Help plant, turn, compost, water and weed. You pick the day and the time (within reason) and we will be delighted to have the help!
  • Chicken Care: Our flock of Plymouth Barred Rocks, also known as “the Girls” would love some help with “chicken chores.” Turn the hen yard soil, change the water, and collect the eggs. The girls will coo, cluck, and scratch for you while you work! Shifts are flexible and should take about 45 minutes to complete.
  • Sewing projects: Everything from program props to tablecloths and pioneer clothing, also repair. Fabric, patterns, and notions provided.
  • Program set up/clean up assistant: Open the sod buildings or set up for Cheyenne Camp, weekdays, approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Tipi maintenance: Check the tipis weekly or biweekly for needed small maintenance.

2008 Volunteer Training

Citizen Scientist: March 1, 2008
Bird, mammal, plant surveys.
NEWCOMERS WELCOME!

March 1 is the beginning of your prairie adventure!

Bird Surveys: Before beginning the survey work, you will need to be trained in bird identification. The bird identification classes will begin on March 1, 2008 at
9am-11:30am led by Citizen Science volunteer, Art Elser.
Please RSVP so we may provide ample materials.

Plant Surveys: Lee Wise will lead volunteers through the process of plant surveys at 10:30am. Come watch the prairie as it changes into its summer attire over the seasons. Please RSVP.

**Citizen Scientists are required to complete at least 4 surveys per year, while receiving hours of quality training, and seasons of prairie experience***

Wells Crossing, the sod village at the Plains Conservation Center: March 1, 2008
Wells Crossing is open to the public on the first Saturday of the month, March-October. As these buildings are historically based, a volunteer is placed in the village during the visiting hours to assist visitors with interpretation. Wells Crossing also serves as a key element for our annual Harvest at the Homestead Festival, the last weekend in September. Training will begin on March 1, 2008 at 9am with naturalist Steve Weiner leading the days activities. Please RSVP so that we may provide ample materials.

** Wells Crossing Volunteers are required to work at least 4 shifts per year, culminating with the Harvest at the Homestead Festival on September 27, 2008.

Public Programs:
Wagon rides, Full Moon Walks, Walk with a Naturalist, Discover your Local Prairie, Special Events: March 8, 2008
Interested in doing a little bit of everything? We host a variety of public programs at the PCC and hope our volunteers want to help with set up/clean up and enjoy a great program! Whether your interest is in leading a Public Program or helping out, join us on March 8, 2008 at 9am. We will begin with morning farm chores, and conclude with a program, Nature as your Neighbor, with Paul Reimer until 11:30am. Please RSVP so that we may provide ample materials.

**This training is required if you are interested in LEADING the programs**
