Calling all Junior Volunteers (ages 13 - 18)

We are looking for responsible youth that love the prairie and love to work with young children. Junior Counselors assist staff with summer day camps, evening campfires, overnight programs and special events. AGES 4 & 5

Super Scientists
July 30 – Aug 3; 9am – 11:30am
Animals, slime, wheels and dinosaurs.  We cover it all in this hands-on program meant for budding scientists.  Each day your little one will discover a new type of science and investigate the prairie using their five senses. Snacks provided. (Children must be toilet trained.)
Early Bird Registration: $70 / member; $80 / non-member
            After June 1: $80 / member; $90 / non-member


AGES 6 - 8

Eco-Art
July 9 – 13
; 9am – 3pm each day
Can you make art with rocks or leaves?  Bring your creativity as we spend the week discovering your inner artist.  Journaling, painting and sculpting are just a few of the mediums we will explore.  You will also leave your mark on the Plains Center by creating a lasting piece of work.     
Early Bird Registration: $170 / member; $195 / non-member
            After June 1: $190 / member; $215 / non-member

Prairie Explorers
Session 1: July 16 – 19; 9am – 3pm Mon – Thurs with optional tipi overnight Thursday night
Session 2: July 30 – Aug 2; 9am – 3pm Mon – Thurs with optional tipi overnight Thursday night
Explore a day in the life of prairie scientists, the Cheyenne Indians, and the homesteading pioneers.  Investigate a mysterious death on the prairie, uncover the survival skills of the native people, and experience the lifestyle of the Colorado settlers.
Early Bird Registration: $140 / member; $160 / non- member
            After June 1: $160 / member; $180 / non-member
Tipi Overnight: $30 / member; $35 / non-member (Children are picked up at 9am on Friday.)

Nature Detectives
July 23 – 27; 9am – 3pm each day

Unravel the mysterious clues left behind on the prairie by animals of all shapes and sizes. We will be learning the art and science of tracking and conducting several wildlife investigations.

Gone Buggy
July 9 – 13
; 9am – 3pm each day
Become an entomologist and discover the truth about creepy crawlies. Make your own insect pooter (?!) for safely catching and releasing bugs. Compete in Insect Olympics, test your knowledge at Insect Jeopardy, and explore the prairie for its tiniest wildlife.

Naturalists-In-Training
June 25 – 28
; 9am – 3pm Mon – Thurs with optional overnight Thursday night
Delve into an exploration of the prairie through the eyes of a scientist. Learn the techniques of entomologists, botanists, ornithologists, herpetologists and more through hands-on field investigations. Practice your naturalist skills like orienteering and nature journaling. Overnight will include an astronomy program & telescope viewing (weather permitting).

Science & Service – Camping Excursion at West Bijou
August 6 @ 9am to August 8 @ 4pm

Learn how to camp without “leaving a trace.” Improve your birding skills and assist scientists on active research projects. Leave the place better than you found it by participating in a habitat restoration project. Experience the openness and beauty of the prairie in this rustic setting and sleep under the night sky.
